the street slippers // 2021

Vfib Recordings 00116

The Street Slippers are an instrumental funk trio from Brooklyn, NY. J.B. Mills recorded their debut album “Put Your Foot In It” at his Little House Music Studio in August of 2019, and mixed it during the 2020 shutdown. These guys have written/played a lot of music together. Aubrey & Jason have produced the “Yummy Sounds” series https://www.youtube.com/c/YUMMYSOUNDSMUSIC, while Jason & Wes have recorded together for Candice Anitra, The Love Machine Project, and many previous J.B. Mills projects. Jason’s work with Jonathan goes all the way back to Jason’s band “Beetroot” in the early 2000s. Think J Dilla sitting in on drums during a Meters/M.G.’s jam. New Orleans meets Memphis meets Detroit meets Brooklyn. The lineup includes: Aubrey Mills-drums, percussion; Jason Mills-bass, percussion; Wes Mingus-guitar. Jonathan Powell provides all horns. Etsuko Tajima-keys on “Street Slippers Theme”. Put your foot in it.

The beetroot instrumentals // 2021

Vfib Recordings 00106

“The Beetroot Instrumentals is the second collection of music to be released by Brooklyn-based drummer/multi-instrumentalist Jason B Mills under his producer alias “J.B. Mills”. For this EP, Mills pulled some previously unfinished instrumentals from the vault. These are all songs that were originally written for his Independent Music Awards-nominated band “Beetroot”, who were a fixture on the NYC club scene in the early 2000s, but were never graced by (Beetroot vocalist) Fiona’s voice. Deciding that they were too good to remain “unfinished”, he dusted them off, rearranged, and remixed them in the summer of 2020 at his “Little House Music Studio” in Brooklyn, NY. Think King Tubby meets The Meters at a DC Go-go club…. The lineup includes: Derek Nievergelt-Bass; Dave Guy-trumpet; James Hurt-keys; Wynne Bennett-keys; Marivaldo Dos Santos-percussion, programming; Jason Mills-drums, percussion, guitar, additional bass, additional keys, samples & production.”

THE BEAT SOX SESSIONS // 2021

Vfib Recordings 00105

“The Beat Sox Sessions is the first collection of music to be released by Brooklyn-based drummer/multi-instrumentalist Jason B Mills under his producer alias “J.B. Mills”. Completed in early 2020, just as the outside world shut down, its 3 instrumental tracks have been described as “cinematic funk”. More obvious influences include seminal soul/funk acts like The Meters and Booker T. & the M.G.’s, but also extend to include the psychedelic global funk of Khruangbin and punchy punk funk of Fugazi, all with a heavy dub underpinning. Jason was also the producer/bandleader/drummer/songwriter behind the Independent Music Awards-nominated band “Beetroot”, who were a fixture on the NYC club scene in the early 2000s. All tracks were recorded (prior to the pandemic) and mixed by Jason at his “Little House Music Studio” with a stellar lineup of NYC musicians: Derek Nievergelt-Bass; Wes Mingus-guitars; Jonathan Powell-horns; Jason Mills-drums, percussion, samples & production.”
